65 photographs, 14 maps, 5 line reproductions softback — ISBN 978 0 901461 15 5 h = 230mm, w = 175mm, 112pp Railway development has witnessed many individual talents applied to a multitude of schemes, large and small. This study is of Sebastian Meyer, an entrepreneur involved in the creation and operation of a network of minor and secondary lines in the North East of England from the 1880s onwards. Among the dozen or so light railways promoted by Meyer were the Dearne Valley, Isle of Axholme, North Lindsey and North Sunderland. Some were successful, and some still survive, but others were not and are now just a memory in the railway history of the North East. Dr Barnett reveals the circles within which Meyer moved; how they obtained finance and the necessary legislation; their often stormy relations with the larger companies; and their uphill struggles to stave off bankruptcy. This is the study of a fully rounded character, for Meyer still found time to play an active part in other business and civic affairs. A splendid picture is revealed based on original research and is worthy of a place in the records of British social and railway history. "the book offers a thorough account of Meyer’s life and work" – The Tenterden Terrier -

Edited by Alan A. Jackson
56 photographs, 5 maps and line drawings Softback — ISBN 978 0 901461 16 2 h = 230mm, w = 175mm, 160pp Published as a tribute to a truly remarkable and memorable character in the field of railway history. Harold Borley (1895–1989), Londoner and London-based railwayman, devoted his spare time over many years to researching and recording the history of the railways of London and its environs. His particular passion was to establish as accurately as possible significant dates for all major events and infrastructure changes within the area of his interest from the 1830s to modern times; a valuable endeavour which culminated in the publication, seven years before his death, of his classic Chronology of London Railways. The editor has gathered together some introductory comments on the man and his career; a transcript of an interview with him at age 87, in which he vividly recalls his early adult life and railway memories, together with his personal notes supporting this interview. The major element is a collection of most of his published work outside his books. Illustrations have been specially selected to portray the railway scenes with which he was most familiar. "an invaluable guide to the ’flavour’ and character of the greatly-missed Harold Vernon Borley" – Underground News
