The RCHS Journal

The Journal is published in March, July and November each year and contains authoritative papers and articles by members, and objective book reviews.  A printed copy is distributed to members on publication.  Digital versions of the current and recent editions are also available to members on the Members-only Pages on this website.

If you would like to contribute an article to the Journal, please refer to Guidance on writing for the Journal. Please note; this guidance was updated in March 2026.

Back Numbers:  The most recent back numbers of the Journal in printed form are usually available for sale.  For more information on current availability please visit the online shop

The Journal Archive Page enables digital copies of back numbers to be freely downloaded by both members and non-members, except for the fifteen (5 years) most recent issues which are available on the Members-only Pages.  The Archive currently contains all editions from 1955 onwards; the Archive Page also includes an Index to the Journal.

Book Reviews:  Each issue of the Journal contains around twenty book reviews.  We have a team of experienced and knowledgeable reviewers who, each four months, select from the most recent books received from publishers.  We also include some books not sent for review, but recommended by members.  Often these are from small publishers or specialist societies. All books submitted for review will receive an objective opinion; pictorial works, or those in established series, may receive only a short notice.  As our aim is to promote quality in writing in our field, all books will be considered by their reviewers for entry into the Transport History Book of the Year Awards.  Publishers are invited to contact the Reviews Editor with a view to submitting books for review.

Supplements:  Occasionally the Society receives articles for the Journal that are too long for inclusion and not appropriate for publication as a book.  Such articles are now being made available as online Supplements to The Journal.
