Railway Chronology
This page was last updated on 19 January 2025 – “Chronology of the Isle of Man Railway” replaced by later version (30 December 2024) and “Great Western Railway Stations (and Great Western Joint Stations) 1941 to 1947” replaced by later version (31 December 2024).
NEW: The latest version (5.05) of “Railway Passenger Stations in Great Britain – a chronology” is now available and an updated version of Clinker’s Register of Closed Passenger Stations and Goods Depots in England, Scotland and Wales 1830 – 1977 is now available.
The Railway & Canal Historical Society’s Railway Chronology Group seeks to bring together members interested in producing databases of railway Acts, line and station opening and closing dates, station renamings, etc, with a view to eventual publication. A regular Newsletter is issued to members which includes both full-length articles and listings and also shorter contributions in the form of Notes and Queries.

The 2023 updated version 5.05 is now available to view and download in the ‘Publications section’ section of the website

An updated version (31 December 2024)) of a “Chronology of the Isle of Man Railway“ which previously appeared here and originally in the Chronology special interest group Newsletter no. 30 (February 2002) is available to view or download.
Clinker’s Register of Closed Passenger Stations and Goods Depots in England, Scotland and Wales 1830 – 1977: Corrections to goods station closure details – compiled by Richard Maund. Corrections to details of goods station closures – for access click “Clinker’s Register: Goods Depot corrections“ – An updated version with substantial modifications up to 14 November 2023 is now available to view or download.
In 2005, Robin J. Smith published “GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY STATIONS (and Great Western Joint Stations) 1941 TO 1947″ which has now been updated (31 December 2024) and can be viewed or downloaded here.
