The Basingstoke Canal is unusual in many ways. Opened in 1794, it was never commercially successful. However it never came under national government control, and remains today as a navigable waterway after an enormous volunteer effort in the 1980s. This talk will cover the history, restoration, and current challenges of the canal.
Neil Barton is a volunteer with the Basingstoke Canal Society who has written about the canal’s history and wildlife. He recently published a YouTube documentary about the restoration of the Basingstoke Canal. https://tinyurl.com/w447j7m6
The Alan Baxter Gallery is a five-minute walk from Farringdon Station. Turn right on exit of the Elizabeth Line station and follow the road round to the right (Cowcross Street). No 75 The Gallery is on the right-hand side.
