August 2021 will mark the 140th anniversary of the opening of the Central Tramway Company, Scarborough.
The third cliff railway to be built in the seaside town it is now one of only two still operating in Scarborough today. One of the busiest cliff railways in the country,
carrying close to half a million passengers annually, the Central Tramway also has the distinction of being the oldest surviving tramway company in Great Britain.
The original corporation established in 1881 survives to this day.
This talk (part 1 of 2) will cover the history of the railway. Part 2, on 27th March, will cover the operation of the railway.

Funicular Pioneers: A Visual Journey Through Scarborough’s Historic Cliff Railways.
As the birth place of passenger carrying cliff railways in the UK, this talk will delve into the story of Scarborough’s five funicular railways exploring why so many were built in such a short time in this small Yorkshire seaside town. Rare archive images from Scarborough Museums Trust, Funimag.com and Scarborough Library will be included in the talk.
Amy Bartle is the fourth generation of the Purshouse family to be involved with the Central Tramway. A background in press and marketing led to her creating a website and print publications for the company. Her role has since expanded to include community engagement projects and educational programmes with the local Museums Trust, and schools, sharing the unique story of the cliff railway.
