PageLines- 800px-Lingqu_Canal_by_Farm.jpg In a fascinating talk, given on the 28th Nov at the London Group, President Mike Clarke took us on a world tour starting in China and travelling in time to the UK via Italy, France and the Netherlands arriving just in time to join James Brindley as an apparent latecomer in canal construction.

In 214 BC, Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty, ordered the construction of a canal connecting the Xiang and the Li rivers. It is the oldest contour canal in the world and it was fitted with thirty-six flash locks by 825 AD and there is a clear description of pound locks in the twelfth century.
