On 25 October 2018 the long-awaited Tram Train service commenced operation between Sheffield Cathedral and Rotherham Parkgate via Rotherham Central station. This was two weeks after our planned visit so we have now been invited to join Railway Ramblers on their tour. Note that the date is a Saturday.
Meet at 10.30 in the tram platform waiting area at Meadowhall Interchange, adjacent to platform 1 of the railway station, on arrival of the trains from Sheffield (dep 10.18) and Leeds (dep 09.38), where we will catch the tram to Meadowhall South and then the tram-train to Rotherham Parkgate. Walking back to Meadowhall via the canal towpath and other paths, we will view the tram-train route and the remnants of various earlier railways, with escape options by bus en route hence participants may choose how far they walk, up to a maximum of 8 miles. Early pub lunch in Rotherham centre. Bus pass holders travel free; currently for others a single ticket is £2.50, or £4 for a Dayrider ticket. Check nearer the time for possible strike action on Northern trains. Contact leader Chris Thompson (telephone 07984-094613) with any queries.
