DESCRIPTION:For the twenty-second\, and final\, lecture in our Winter/Sprin
 g 2021 Series\, Robin Leleux will give the final part of his 2-part lectur
 e on "Railways and Social Change in Victorian Britain". It is not necessa
 ry to have attended the first lecture to enjoy this one.\n\nWhen Queen Vic
 toria came to the throne in 1837 the Railway Age was getting into its stri
 de\, with significant trunk lines either already open\, nearly so\, or aut
 horised by Parliament\, plus several local ones. When she died in 1901 rai
 lways were indisputably a major part of the fabric of Britain. In the inte
 rvening half century and more they had directly or indirectly played a maj
 or part in changing the nature of society\, whether in policing\, educatio
 n\, religion\, employment\, diet\, dissemination of news and views or holi
 days and relaxation\, not overlooking the standardisation of time. In a tw
 o-part well-illustrated talk\, each of about 45 minutes to give time for q
 uestions and discussion\, Robin Leleux will look at the influence railways
