NW Group Pre-Christmas Lunch: Thursday 6th December 2018
This event is now fully booked. Those who have booked, please note that the optional pre-lunch walk is 3.5 miles along a canal towpath. Other than the canal itself, there are no obvious hazards after crossing the road near to Stalybridge railway station. The towpath is hard-surfaced but there are some puddles and, where leaf mold has accumulated, it can be muddy – paragraph “For Walkers” below.

This year the traditional NW Group Pre-Christmas Lunch will be held on Thursday 6th December at the Roaches Lock Inn, 387 Manchester Road, Mossley, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL5 9BB – see photo below. The timing is 12:30 for 12:45pm.
The menu choices will be from the pub’s seasonal menu: for the menu click here: Roches Lock Inn Menu. Please bring a note of your selections with you – we will though have a full list with us on the day.
There will be an optional pre-lunch walk (3.5 miles) along the towpath of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal from Stalybridge to the Roaches lock, which is adjacent to the Roaches Inn – see photo below. There will also be some points of railway history along the way.
Note, change of time from Victoria: Walkers should meet at the main entrance of Stalybridge station at 10:40am. Recommended trains are the 10:17 departure from Manchester Piccadilly (Transpennine train to Leeds) or the 9:53 departure from Manchester Victoria (Northern train to Stalybridge). These trains arrive Stalybridge at 10:29 and 10:07 respectively. Please check these times nearer to the date.
For Walkers: The seasonal weather means that, unfortunately, there will not be much time on the walk to divert from the towpath to view adjacent sites. Anyone wishing to view sites such as the area around the former Millbrook station and sidings or Scout Tunnel should try to arrive at Stalybridge either on the 9:47 from Piccadilly or the 9:53 departure from Victoria, arriving Stalybridge at 9:59 and 10:07 respectively, and then start the walk. We can debate why a high level overhead covered coal conveyor was built from the Micklefield Loop line and over a canal and river when the main line from Stalybridge was adjacent to the power station over lunch (see attachments 1 & 4). We also anticipate a return visit to the area looking at the Micklefield Loop Line on one of our regular Thursday walks. The route to the start of the canal section of the walk is to turn right (downhill) outside Stalybridge station into Market Street, pass under the railway bridge and then take the 3rd right turn into Shepley Street or Water Street (also signed as Caroline Street) both of which which lead straight into Caroline Street. Continue on Caroline Street, across the bridge over the River Tame to Caroline Street Canal Bridge and then down to the towpath – heading east.
