Memorable Canal Visits: A South Pennines Circle.

For a number of years Ian Moss (RCHS President, 1996-98) has been organising and leading his “Memorable Canals Visits” for the Wilmslow Guild. NW Group intends to continue this tradition under the auspices of the RCHS Regional Groups.

Our first venture, in what we hope will be an annual event, will be to visit sites on the Rochdale Canal, the Calder & Hebble Navigation and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. The tour will be by coach. There will be a commentary on both canal and railway sites along the way and also opportunities to spend time at selected sites of particular interest. Illustrated notes are available using the link below. The visits selected are at: Hebden Bridge, Sowerby Bridge, Salterhebble, Marsden and Stalybridge.

Lunch will be in the Refreshment Room at Sowerby Bridge Station where there will be a buffet provided. Vegetarians will be catered for and there are also seats at the station for those who prefer to bring a packed lunch.

Plans are that the coach can be boarded at Stockport Railway Station at 10:00am or, alternatively, at Rochdale Railway Station at 10:40am (approx). Drop offs for return journeys home will be at Stalybridge and Stockport. It is anticipated that the return time at Stockport will be 17:30 approx. The cost for the coach will be £15 per person.

The number of places on the coach is limited to a maximum of 40 passengers. Reservations may be made through contacting Roger Brice (tel: 01625 533959; 07702 303242 or by email: roger.brice1945@gmail.com). The closing date for payment is June 14th and cheques should be made to “Railway & Canal Historical Society”.
