Lapworth railway station
A walk led by Philip Brown along the towpath of the Grand Union Canal from Lapworth to Warwick Parkway (distance 8 miles) including the short connection with the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal at Lapworth, the horse tunnel at Shrewley and the 21 chamber Hatton Locks flight.
O/S 1:50,000 Landranger maps 139 & 151 and O/S 1:25,000 Explorer maps 220 & 221 cover the whole route.
Meet at Lapworth Station at 10.00 a.m. following the arrival of the 09.34 a.m. departure (Chiltern Railways) from Birmingham Moor Street (dep. Solihull at 09.43 and Dorridge at 09.54). From the north of Lapworth, book a day return ticket to Warwick Parkway which will then cover the return journey.
Anyone travelling by car is recommended to park at Warwick Parkway to take the 09.35 train to Dorridge arriving at 09.45 (Chiltern Railways service towards Birmingham) then join the train from Birmingham at 09.54. Note; a return ticket from Warwick Parkway to Dorridge is cheaper than a single ticket from Warwick Parkway to Lapworth.
The lunch break will be at Hatton, where you can eat at a pub (The Hatton Arms) about 200 metres from the canal or by the canalside at Hatton Locks Café.
An opportunity for an early escape is available from Hatton station (5 miles from the start but about 1¼ miles before the lunch stop) – direct trains to Birmingham at 12.44 and 14.44 calling at all stations (note; this services operates every 2 hours only) or at 13.03 and 15.03 via Leamington Spa.
